You've seen it before. You're about to check out and notice a spot to add a coupon code. If you're one to actively search for a code, maybe you come up with one that gives you 5 or 10% off. Satisfied with your labor, you check out—but could you have saved more?

Purchasing online

Although not foolproof, this is the method I've used to save more than 10% off on a variety of ecommerce sites.

First, if you haven't already, find a coupon for some percentage off. Typically, you will find a voucher or coupon code for 5, 10, or 15% even pretty easily. If you can't find one online, try almost completing the checkout process. If the shopping cart process is multistep, and you have previously supplied an email address, there is a good chance that site will send you an email with a code to entice you to complete your transaction. If this doesn't work, you can try signing up for their email list or do a search on their social media accounts for codes.

Because people can only remember and attend to so many things at once, you will often find a codes in a variety of common formats. More likely than not, it will also have a number in it. Change that number, maintaining the same format otherwise and see what happens. Oftentimes people will generate codes in increments of 5%.

"TENOFF" might become "THIRTYOFF," "Get15" might become "Get20," "Save10" become "Save25," and so on.

If all else fails, you can always write to the site and ask them for a discount. Remember that you always start at "no," so it doesn't hurt to ask. Being very specific, smart, and intentional can help in creating a winning offer for both you and the business you want to buy from.
